The Parent Drug Information Service (PDIS) is a 24-hour, confidential telephone service for parents and families in Western Australia. Located within the Alcohol and Drug Information Service (ADIS), professional counsellors and trained parent volunteers offer support, information and referral to parents and families across WA. PDIS is the first place for parents and families to call.
Information:
Drugs, prevalence, drug effects, appearance, statistics, treatment agencies, treatment options, communication strategies, protective factors and resilience, parent and family information, change behaviour, parent and family support options.
Counselling:
Brief strategic interventions for parents and family members that validate, acknowledge and capitalise on the strength and wisdom of families. Parents and/or guardians are offered ongoing support through telephone call backs.
Referral:
Treatment options and counselling support for parents and families. PDIS keeps an updated list of support group options for parents and families.
Parent to Parent Support:
PDIS offers a range of services to enhance support to families. In addition to professional counselling, PDIS trains and supervises a team of volunteer parents who have had personal experience of a son or daughter using alcohol and other drugs. This means that callers have the option of talking with a professional counsellor, a volunteer parent – or both. This service is confidential, supportive, and offers strategies and opportunities to discuss experiences.
Drug Court Support:
Parent volunteers offer support, guidance, information and referral to families in the Drug Court. Volunteers attend the weekly information sessions and are available in person for consultation on Mondays in Drug Court. Follow up telephone calls and ongoing support is also offered.
Perth Children’s Court Support:
Support is also available in person to families in the Children’s Court on Tuesdays. A display stand in the foyer welcomes families to seek alcohol and other drug information, parent-to-parent support and court information. Follow up telephone calls and ongoing support is also offered.
Community Education Talks:
The PDIS Coordinator and parent volunteers are available to provide informative presentations to community groups and other agencies. The presentations can include an outline of PDIS services as well as the opportunity to learn about the experiences of families who have lived with a drug using son or daughter, and effective strategies that families can use when dealing with the issue of drugs.
These presentations are free of cost and speakers are available during office hours as well as after hours and weekends by negotiation.
For further information, please contact the Coordinator, Lee-Anne Raeside, telephone (08) 9370 0376.
Youth Withdrawal Respite Service (YW&RS)
Parent volunteers also have the option to support family members who attend the Youth Withdrawal Respite Service. Volunteers provide information, support and referral to family members visiting their son or daughter in residence at YW&RS.
