Summit information
The Summit was held on Tuesday 3 July 2007.
The purpose of the Summit was to identify and develop strategies to address illicit amphetamine use in Western Australia.
The Summit addressed all illicit amphetamines, including crystalline methamphetamine or ‘Ice’. This included diverted dexamphetamines.
The focus of the Summit was on the key WA Alcohol and Drug Strategy areas of :
- Prevention
- Treatment and
- Law enforcement
It also addressed key areas across the whole of government where amphetamines are making an adverse impact:
- Mental health
- Acute health services, particularly emergency departments
- Child protection
- Corrections including prisons, courts and community justice.
The Summit was sponsored and chaired by the Commissioner for Police and the Director General of Health. Participants in the Summit were invited representatives from the key focus areas, stakeholder and community groups.
To ensure broad and appropriate consultation with Aboriginal people and communities, consultations were included as part of the Aboriginal Alcohol and Drug Forum which were held on 1&2 May 2007. Ms Wendy Casey, Manager Aboriginal Alcohol and Other Drug Programs, Drug and Alcohol Office, reported the outcomes to the Summit.
The Summit aimed to achieve outcomes that:
- Would initiate concrete developments in the key areas of treatment, prevention and law enforcement.
- Inform and reinforce the implementation of whole of government agency drug and alcohol action plans for 2007/08

Program
The Summit program was developed to provide participants with expert information in the morning focussing on the key summit areas of:
- Prevention
- Treatment; and
- Law enforcement.
Presentations are followed by an open issue discussion to provide the opportunity for a broad range of issues and impacts to be identified and canvassed and suggestions for strategies to be put forward.
The afternoon session will comprise of participation in working groups with the aim to produce a number of recommendations and identify priorities for action.
The recommendations from the working groups will be presented in a final plenary session by the chairs of the Summit.

WA Illicit Amphetamine Summit - Government Action Plan
The WA Illicit Amphetamine Summit was held on the 3rd July 2007. Stemming from the Summit recommendations the WA Illicit Amphetamine Summit – Government Action Plan has been developed. It comprises 49 law enforcement, treatment and prevention initiatives to further develop and improve services and programs to address illicit amphetamine use in WA. The Plan also includes background information on to the Summit, the nature and prevalence of illicit amphetamine use in Western Australia, and how the plan will be implemented and monitored. |
