ST247 Drugs and alcohol, sexual violence and mental health
    Thursday, 20 August 2009, 9.00 am – 4.30 pm

Presenter: Judi Stone, Acting Manager, Workforce Development Branch, DAO

There is a strong relationship between mental health problems, drug and alcohol use, and people who have experienced child sexual abuse. People working in the mental health or drug and alcohol field can find it challenging working with sexual abuse issues and can often feel as though they don’t have the skills or knowledge to address sexual abuse. The focus of this workshop will be on the links between these behaviours, and the therapeutic options available. This workshop will also include information specifically about issues affecting males who have experienced sexual abuse.

Target audience: This workshop is recommended for workers with limited experience working with sexual abuse issues who currently work with clients affected by mental health and/or drug and alcohol issues.

    Application deadline date: REGISTRATION CLOSED

ST244 Who is ‘addicted’ to what? Working with the distress a substance problem can create in a couple’s relationship
    Thursday, 3 September 2009, 9.00 am – 12.30 pm

Presenter: Sandy Williams, Clinical Psychologist in private practice and Senior Lecturer, School of Psychology, Murdoch University

When one partner has a substance use problem, the other partner can become ‘addicted’ to efforts to control it, and a cycle of mutual distress escalates and compounds the situation, when ideally the relationship needs to be the crucible for managing the problems together. Curiously each partner can feel almost exactly the same range of emotions (e.g. fear) and can inflict the same range of unhelpful behaviours (e.g. attack) on one another. How can we understand and help to break this cycle, and allow the relationship to do the best job it can under the circumstance?

Target audience: For workers with a background in substance use problems but who do not have a lot of experience in couples therapy

Application deadline date: 20 August 2009

Enquiries: Lisa Huntley, telephone 9370 0368, email DAO.Education@health.wa.gov.au

This core training is presented over three days and each session is designed to build on skills sequentially. Topics include:

    • effective AOD counselling skills and techniques
    • engaging and forming the ‘helping’ relationship
    • systemic concepts and approach
    • getting and keeping things moving – raising the issue and assessment, motivation and change
    • problem - what problem?
    • keeping on track – challenges to change
    • back to square one – managing relapse
    • where to from here?
    • other issues including client confidentiality, duty of care, worker self-care.

Target audience: New workers and others wanting to refresh their skills in working with alcohol and drug using clients

ST245 ‘I’m all over the place’: Helping drug clients manage their emotions
    Tuesday, 22 September 2009

Presenter: Dr Ali Marsh, Clinical Psychologist

Affect regulation difficulties are common among people with substance use problems. They can manifest as depression, anxiety, fluctuating moods, emotional ‘melt-downs’ or explosive anger, which can make it hard to behave consistently, have a solid sense of identity and stop using. This workshop will explore the causes of affect dysregulation, links between affect dysregulation and substance use, and how to help clients manage their emotions better.

Practical strategies will be drawn from various perspectives including dialectical behaviour therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, mindfulness, and general stress management. Activities will include skill demonstration and skill practise.

Target audience: For professionals working with AOD using clients.

ST249 Post-traumatic stress disorder, alcohol and drugs
    Friday, 16 October 2009, 9.00 am – 4.30 pm

Presenter: Dr David Cockram, Psychologist and Australian Vietnam infantry combat veteran

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is at its core a consequence of failed memory processing. Why do some people recover from trauma and others develop long-term PTSD and related problems? There is a consistent finding that people with PTSD are more likely to have problems with alcohol and other drugs (AOD). For example, 60% to 80% of Vietnam veterans seeking PTSD treatment have alcohol use disorders. This workshop will identify the criteria for PTSD, the role of personality and discuss effective treatments.

Target audience: For professionals working with AOD using clients

Application deadline date: 2 October 2009

ST246 Does one model fit all? Effective and ethical cross-cultural applications of Western therapeutic paradigms for comorbid presentations
    Wednesday, 18 November 2009, 9.00 am – 4.30 pm

Presenters: Dr Bernadette Wright, Specialist Clinical Psychologist, WA Transcultural Mental Health Centre
Heather Jacobson, Senior Workforce Development Officer, DAO

Our Western cultural understanding of mental health, substance use and counselling treatment is not universal. This workshop will question and examine the impact of a ‘blanket’ application of conventional therapeutic practice for a multicultural client group experiencing problems with their mental health and substance use. The principles of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Narrative Therapy will be compared and contrasted with a view to developing a culturally sensitive intervention model. Participants will then be given an opportunity for skills rehearsal and feedback.

Target audience: For workers who have a role in responding to AOD/mental health issues with CaLD clients

Application deadline date: 3 November 2009

KA031 Substance use and interactions with psychiatric medications (with a focus on psychostimulant drugs and anti-psychotic medication)
    Thursday, 19 November 2009, 9.00 am – 12.30 pm

Presenters: Dr Gordon Shymko, Clinical Director, PaRK and Rockingham Mental Health Services
Paul Reilly, Service Development Manager, PaRK Mental Health Services

Some mental health clients continue to use substances whilst being prescribed psychiatric medications, including anti-psychotics and anti-depressants. The interactions between these drugs are complex and can be harmful, increasing the risk of illness relapse or prolonged recovery.

This workshop aims to highlight the complex effects of this poly drug use on the individual’s behaviour, health and mental state, and provide information to assist clinicians working with individuals presenting with co-morbid substance use and mental health problems.

Target audience: For professionals working with AOD using clients, who also have co-existing mental health problems, particularly psychosis

    REGISTRATION CLOSED - FULLY BOOKED

ST250 Developing stepped care approaches to youth comorbidity
    Wednesday, 2 December 2009, 9.00 am – 4.30 pm

Presenters: Associate Professor Dan Lubman & Dr Steve Carroll, Orygen Youth Health, University of Melbourne

Early onset or frequent alcohol or cannabis use during adolescence, increases the risk of developing mental health problems as well as a range of other adverse outcomes during late adolescence and early adulthood. Similarly, depressive and/or anxiety symptoms during adolescence can increase the risk of substance use problems in young adulthood. The high rates of co-occurring depression/anxiety and substance use disorders in community and clinical surveys of young people further highlights the importance of targeted prevention and early intervention programs for young people.

In this workshop, a stepped care approach to managing co-occurring depression/anxiety and substance use in young people will be presented. Workshop participants will develop skills in using motivational interviewing and psychoeducational strategies, formulate appropriate coping plans, and learn how to apply relevant integrated CBT strategies to the management of young people with co-occurring disorders.

Target audience: For professionals working with AOD using clients

Application deadline date: 17 November 2009
