ST245 ‘I’m all over the place’: Helping drug clients manage their emotions
Tuesday, 22 September 2009

Presenter: Dr Ali Marsh, Clinical Psychologist

Affect regulation difficulties are common among people with substance use problems. They can manifest as depression, anxiety, fluctuating moods, emotional ‘melt-downs’ or explosive anger, which can make it hard to behave consistently, have a solid sense of identity and stop using. This workshop will explore the causes of affect dysregulation, links between affect dysregulation and substance use, and how to help clients manage their emotions better.

Practical strategies will be drawn from various perspectives including dialectical behaviour therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, mindfulness, and general stress management. Activities will include skill demonstration and skill practise.

Target audience: For professionals working with AOD using clients.
