KA031 Substance use and interactions with psychiatric medications (with a focus on psychostimulant drugs and anti-psychotic medication)
Thursday, 19 November 2009, 9.00 am – 12.30 pm

Presenters: Dr Gordon Shymko, Clinical Director, PaRK and Rockingham Mental Health Services
Paul Reilly, Service Development Manager, PaRK Mental Health Services

Some mental health clients continue to use substances whilst being prescribed psychiatric medications, including anti-psychotics and anti-depressants. The interactions between these drugs are complex and can be harmful, increasing the risk of illness relapse or prolonged recovery.

This workshop aims to highlight the complex effects of this poly drug use on the individual’s behaviour, health and mental state, and provide information to assist clinicians working with individuals presenting with co-morbid substance use and mental health problems.

Target audience: For professionals working with AOD using clients, who also have co-existing mental health problems, particularly psychosis
