ST250 Developing stepped care approaches to youth comorbidity
Wednesday, 2 December 2009, 9.00 am – 4.30 pm

Presenters: Associate Professor Dan Lubman & Dr Steve Carroll, Orygen Youth Health, University of Melbourne

Early onset or frequent alcohol or cannabis use during adolescence, increases the risk of developing mental health problems as well as a range of other adverse outcomes during late adolescence and early adulthood. Similarly, depressive and/or anxiety symptoms during adolescence can increase the risk of substance use problems in young adulthood. The high rates of co-occurring depression/anxiety and substance use disorders in community and clinical surveys of young people further highlights the importance of targeted prevention and early intervention programs for young people.

In this workshop, a stepped care approach to managing co-occurring depression/anxiety and substance use in young people will be presented. Workshop participants will develop skills in using motivational interviewing and psychoeducational strategies, formulate appropriate coping plans, and learn how to apply relevant integrated CBT strategies to the management of young people with co-occurring disorders.

Target audience: For professionals working with AOD using clients

Application deadline date: 17 November 2009
