The Volunteer Support Network is part of the Parent and Family Drug Support Line
, our helpline for parents and families concerned about a loved one's drinking or drugging.
Who can become a volunteer with the Network?
We recruit parents and guardians with a non-judgemental attitude who've experienced their own child or loved one's substance use.
In particular, we encourage people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds including Aborginal people and Torres Straight Islanders to apply.
What do the volunteers do?
The volunteers work one rostered shift a week from home, speaking to parents and family members who've telephoned the P&FDSL helpline for support. Shifts last 4-5 hours.
They listen, share practical coping strategies and discuss options with the caller.
Volunteers also have the opportunity to promote the service by presenting to community groups and participating in community events.
What does the training involve?
Volunteers undertake an initial three day training program that covers general drug and alcohol information and basic counselling skills.
We assign a staff member to train each new volunteer and provide regular supervision and debriefing opportunities.
Ongoing training also takes place, including training in drug court processes which allows volunteers to attend court information sessions to assist families by offering support, information and referral to parents needing help.
How do I apply?
We recruit periodically by advertising in selected newspapers and notifying parent and community groups. Prospective volunteers need to complete an application, and are then interviewed.
