Guidelines For Applications For Advertised Vacancies

For guidelines on applying for positions within DAO please see the information in the Application Package or online at www.jobs.wa.gov.au.

Your Application Must Include:

  • The completed application form
  • Your resume and detailed submission which addresses the selection criteria
  • Photocopy(s) of any relevant qualifications ( will be asked for if you are successful and have applied on line )
  • A covering letter is optional

Resume

Your resume should include the following information:

  • Personal details eg. Name, address, telephone number.
  • A summary of your work experience commencing from the most recent to the least recent. Include dates and give details of the responsibilities and your achievements in each job.
  • Details of education and training qualifications/achievements, particularly those relevant to the position. Membership of any professional bodies should also be included.
  • Any activities you have undertaken outside of work which are relevant to the application.

Addressing the Selection Criteria

To be considered for the position, you must address the selection criteria. Treat each criterion separately. Use each criterion as a heading and provide examples of specific events/projects in which you have used the required skills, aptitude, experience or knowledge. Include, where possible, details of the outcome of events and feedback you received. It is recommended that your response to each individual statement cover no more than one (1) page.

Your application MUST address the selection criteria, consideration for an interview is based on your application demonstrating that you meet the Essential requirements of the position and are competitive within the field.

Proof of Education/Formal Qualification

Do not submit originals of your qualifications. Photocopies should be attached to your application. You may be asked to present originals at a later date if you have applied on line.

Note: if you possess qualifications from overseas or interstate, which may not be recognised in Western Australia, it will be necessary for you to supply information on the status of them in terms of a Western Australian equivalent.

Referees

Referees may be contacted to verify your claims in relation to the requirements of the position. It is desirable that one of your referees is a current supervisor and that all referees should be able to provide information on your work performance. You should obtain permission from people prior to nominating them as referees.

Two referees must be nominated and should be contacted for approval before listing them in your application. Their names, work addresses and contact telephone number should be provided.

Preparing for the Interview

The job interview is an important part of the selection process. All interview questions will be based on the requirements of the position.

To prepare for the questions:
  • Be aware of what the job involves. This can be established from the Job Description Form and by talking to the contact officer as listed in the advertisement.
  • Focus on the selection criteria and think of examples of situations where you have applied the relevant skills and abilities.
  • Focus on the principal responsibilities of the position and how you would carry them out. Think of any problems you may encounter and how you would resolve them.
  • Think about any relevant reports or other documentation you have produced that provide examples of your skills and abilities.
  • Take a copy of your completed application and any questions you may wish to ask the panel.

The Selection Interview

At the interview:

Usually the Selection Panel will comprise of three people.

Do not assume that each panel member knows about your suitability for the position even though you may have worked with them or have had previous experience in the position for which you have applied.

Take time to answer each question. A well thought out answer presented clearly and concisely will be appreciated by the panel, even though you have taken a few moments to put your thoughts together.

If you do not understand a question, ask for clarification before providing a reply.

Give direct answers to questions. Be honest if the answer to a factual question is not known. Where possible, relate your answers to direct experience you have had.

Ask questions relevant to the position.

After the Interview

You will be notified of the outcome of your application. When you have been advised of the result of your application, you are encouraged to seek feedback from the selection panel convenor. This is an important learning experience and is helpful to assist you to prepare for future applications and interviews. The recommended applicant will be required to undertake a Criminal Records Screening Check, in accordance with DAO’s Policy. This check is conducted through the Health Department Criminal Records Screening Unit at a cost to the employee.

The Standard

The minimum stand of merit, equity and probity is met for recruitment, slelction and appointment if:

  • A proper assessment matches a candidate’s skills, knowledge and abilities with the work-related requirements of the job and the outcomes sought by the public sector body, which may include diversity.
  • The process is open, competitive and free of bias, unlawful discrimination, nepotism or patronage.
  • Decisions are transparent and capable of review.

Breach of Public Sector Standards

If you believe that the compliance requirements in relation to the recruitment, selection and appointment process have been breached, you are encouraged to discuss your concerns with the convenor of the panel in the first instance. Should you wish to lodge a formal application for a review of the process, you have ten (10) working days from the time an unsuccessful advice has been delivered to you, in the ordinary course of post or personal delivery.

An application for a review must specify which part of the standards have been breached and must be lodged with: Manager, Human Resources, Drug and Alcohol Office, 7 Field St, Mt Lawley WA 6050.
