The Next Step Drug and Alcohol Service Inpatient Withdrawal Unit provides medically supervised withdrawal from alcohol, opioids, amphetamines and other drugs.
Generally withdrawal takes place over a seven day admission to the unit, which is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week by nurses and allied health workers. Doctors are on site Monday to Friday, and on call after hours.
There are 17 beds available, including four beds which are part of the Aboriginal Withdrawal Unit.
Group programs are a large component of the withdrawal process at Next Step. This includes therapeutic and education-focused programs, and all clients are expected to participate. Clients also have access to psychology, social work and welfare services during their stay.
The Inpatient Withdrawal Unit is a smoke free environment, and nicotine replacement therapy is provided for the duration of the client's admission.
