Pharmacotherapies
These are drugs prescribed by a doctor to help treat a drug or alcohol dependency. Some are used for a short period of time to ease a withdrawal syndrome. Some are used to induce withdrawal. Some are used to support abstinence by reducing cravings, blocking the effects of further drug use or by making further use very uncomfortable. Some are used as a replacement for illegal drugs. Research is clear that these drugs are more effective when used in conjunction with counselling.
The range of available pharmacotherapies is broad (from nicotine patches to methadone) and finding the right one can be difficult. Access to opiate pharmacotherapies (methadone or buprenorphine) that provide pharmacotherapy treatment can only be made through ADIS.
