Aims and objectives

The Aboriginal Alcohol and other Drugs Program (AAODP) forms part of the Drug and Alcohol Office, Policy Strategy and Information Branch.  The program is committed to support Aboriginal people and the broader community to respond effectively to Aboriginal and / or Torres Strait Islander individuals, families and communities affected by alcohol and other drug use in culturally secure ways.

Key Activities

* Workforce development initiatives for the Aboriginal workforce and broader human services sector.  This includes:

- Delivery of the Aboriginal Alcohol and other Drugs Worker Training Program, CHC30802 Certificate III in Community Services Work

- Development and delivery of cultural awareness and culturally secure clinical and community  development support training for Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal workers

- Development of nationally recognised training for Aboriginal Alcohol and other Drug Workers such as CHC41702 Certificate IV in Alcohol and Other Drugs Work.

- Development of career pathways for Aboriginal Alcohol and other Drug Workers

*  Management of the National Indigenous Alcohol and Drug Worker Training Program.  This program supports delivery of the Aboriginal Alcohol and other Drugs Worker Training Program, CHC30802 Certificate III in Community Services Work in partner jurisdictions including the NT, QLD, ACT, NSW, SA and TAS.

* Promote, distribute, implement, monitor and evaluate the Strong Spirit Strong Mind:  WA Aboriginal Alcohol and other Drugs Plan 2005 – 2009.

* Development of culturally secure AOD resources including the Strong Spirit Strong Mind brochures, booklets and DVD’s.

* Policy, planning and strategic development.

* Coordinate the annual WA Aboriginal Alcohol and other Drug Worker Forum

* Improve Aboriginal access to culturally secure services within mainstream programs

* Provide external, internal and across agency culturally secure support, input and advice for the AOD and broader human service sector
